Born in Janesville, Wisconsin, Boylen studied at Yale and the University of Wisconsin before studying studio pottery at the School for American Craftsmen. As a graduate student, he studied under Harvey Littleton and later set up a glass workshop at the Haystack School for Crafts as well as the Penland School of Crafts. Boylen's works are held in the collections of the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Corning Museum of Glass, among others.
